5 Garage Door Trends to Look for in 2018

Some of the biggest garage door trends this year will include natural materials, bold colors, glass, and brass! We'll also be seeing even more advanced technology from companies like LiftMaster and Chamberlain as we look to the future.

Natural Materials

As society continues to move in a more eco-friendly direction, homes and their building material are following suit. Wooden doors are not just a positive for the environment, but they’re also fully customizable. Some manufacturers offer composite doors which offer the benefits of both wooden and steel doors. Bold Colors

The rationale for garage doors a decade ago was simple—blend and go unnoticed. In 2018, however, that principle will be turned on its head. Neutral, earth tones will be replaced with deep reds, welcoming yellows, and regal blues. If your garage door is street-facing, it’s likely the very first thing that passers-by notice. Make your first impression count by utilizing bold color! With this new trend, garage doors won't just be a part of a home’s curb appeal, they’ll be the curb appeal. Brightly-colored garages that reflect the personality of your home—and you!—act as an extension of your front door and invite friends and family alike into the heart of your space. Who knows, you may even spot Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, on a door near you!

Brass

Holy throw back! If you’re looking to update your garage hardware, brass is the metal for you. Brass accents are booming for both interior and exterior decorating. Updating or adding hardware is a simple way to freshen the look of your garage door.

Garages are no longer the dark, cluttered spaces of our childhoods. Were you from a “I don’t know where it is, go look in the garage” family, too? A glass door allows for a significant amount of natural light, making it easier to work and hobby in your garage. The extra exposure also adds some incentive to take on that organization project you’ve been putting off. Looking for a starting point? The 2018 HGTV Dream Home is complete with the caviar of garage spaces; their door might become the inspiration for yours!

(Even More) Technology

The Chamberlain WD1000WF is nerdtechy.com’s top choice for smart-phone-controlled garage door opener. This model is complete with wireless keypad, two remotes, safety sensors, and an LCD wall control panel. If you aren’t wanting to completely change your unit but are still looking for smart phone connectivity, Chamberlain also offers the MYQ-G0201 which acts as an add-on to your existing garage door opener, while allowing for smart phone and wifi integration.

If you’re just looking to update your opener, staplesearch.com recommends the LiftMaster 8500 garage door opener. They found in their 2018 Buyer’s Guide that the following three features set this LiftMaster product apart from its competitors:

  • It's more durable, especially in comparison to other wall-mounted garage openers on the market.
  • It provides enhanced security, even when no one’s home.
  • The weather resistance feature allows it to operate in extreme weather conditions.
