You’re about to board a plane to head south and escape the cold winter weather for a week, then a thought enters your mind. I can’t remember if I shut the garage door! Panic sets in as you reluctantly board the plane and frantically attempt to text your neighbor to check your house for you.

This type of situation can be easily avoided. Monitor your garage while you're away from home by connecting your garage door opener to the internet and downloading the MyQ app onto your smart phone.

Connecting Your Garage Door Opener to the Internet

These instructions are specifically for LiftMaster-brand Wi-Fi garage door openers. For other brands, follow the instructions included in your manual.

Before you begin, test the Wi-Fi signal strength in your garage with your cell phone or other mobile device. If it’s strong, your opener should be able to connect without a problem.

Step 1: Locate the smart control panel in your garage.

  • Press Menu.
  • Press the down arrow until Program is highlighted. Select it using the side arrow, and it will lead you to a new menu.
  • Press the down arrow until Wi-Fi Setup is highlighted. Select it by pressing the side arrow.

Step 2: Listen for a beep.

Listen for your garage door opener to beep one time, then look at the smart control panel. It should say, Wi-Fi Setup Started.

Step 3: Connect to the MyQ network.

Pull out your mobile device and go to Wi-Fi Settings; select the listing with a MyQ prefix and connect.

Step 4: Connect your garage door opener to the internet.

  • Pull up a web browser on your mobile device.
  • Type in myqdevice.com.
  • Select Start; you’ll be prompted to set up your garage door opener to connect to your home network.
  • Go through the setup process.
  • Write down the serial number you receive. (This is also located on the back of your garage door opener.)

Step 5: Download the LiftMaster MyQ app.

  • When prompted, download the app on your mobile device.
  • Create your account as directed.
  • Register your device, and type in the serial number when prompted.

That’s all there is to it! Now, all you need to do is test out your app to make sure it opens and closes your door as directed. You’ll now be able to check to make sure your door is closed while you’re away from home and operate it from anywhere with internet access!
