How to Keep Your Garage Cool During the Hot Iowa Summer

Iowa summers can be hot, hot, hot. Without the use of air conditioning, the temperature of your garage is likely to rise well beyond a comfortable level. If you use your garage as a space for working on projects or if you're trying to make your home more energy efficient, this can be a real hindrance. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to lessen the effects summer has on the temperature of your garage. Here's how to keep your garage cool during the hot Iowa summer.

Increase Ventilation

If you’re looking for a permanent fix, consider installing or increasing your garage’s ventilation system. A designated vent for the garage will help circulate airflow and prevent the space from becoming too stuffy during the hot summer months. There are two types of ventilation systems: passive and active. If you aren’t confident in your ability to install one, work with a local contractor or electrician. You’ll be grateful for the extra airflow, and you’ll find that the garage is much more pleasant during the summers.

Install Insulation

A key asset in maintaining the temperature of your garage is insulation. Insulation acts as a barrier between your garage and the outdoor environment and helps to minimize the impact exterior temperatures have on the climate of your space. The best part about insulation is that it not only helps keep your garage cool in the summer, but it also protects against cold temperatures during the winter. In either case, insulation will support your efforts to make your garage energy efficient. There are several different types of insulation with varying application methods and levels of effectiveness. Work with a garage door professional to determine what type will work best for you.

Use a Fan

Portable fans can be a quick fix if you need to be in your garage during a particularly warm part of the day. Unfortunately, it’s probably not very efficient nor effective to leave a fan running all day throughout the summer. While it can be a helpful resource in a pinch, it shouldn’t be your only method of cooling the garage.

Change the Paint

The color of your garage door can have a substantial impact on the temperature of its interior. To reduce the heat absorption that occurs on your garage door’s surface, choose a light paint color like white, tan, or beige. A darker door color will soak in the sun’s heat and cause the garage’s temperature to rise, while painting the door a light color will help to reflect the heat. Remember to properly clean your garage door before adding a new coat of paint.

Wait to Park

Your car generates a tremendous amount of heat when it operates. If you know you'll need to use your garage soon, park your car in the driveway or street instead. This will give the engine a chance to cool off before you move it into the garage, and it will ensure that your efforts to lower the garage temperature are not in vain. Once you're done with the space, then move your car into its regular spot. By this time, the car will be cooled off and won't transfer residual heat to your garage.
