How to Keep Your Garage Door Quiet

When you open or close your garage door, it shouldn’t sound like a motorcycle rally. A properly operating garage door systems should be relatively quiet and smooth. Over time, the wear and tear of cycling can result in a fairly noisy system. Here’s what you can do to keep your garage door quiet.

Lubricate Moving Components

Most of your garage door’s parts are made of metal. When these moving pieces rub against one another, they create friction—and sometimes an unpleasant screeching. To prevent this, lubricate your garage door system at least once a year. Be sure to use a lubricant intended for metal—ideally, a non-silicon-based lubricant. First, clean the tracks with a damp rag. Then, apply the lubricant and wipe away any excess. Never use grease to lubricate your system as this can harden and create inefficiency.

Tighten All Hardware

As you may have already noticed, there are many screws, nuts, and bolts holding your garage door system together. If any of the hardware on your door is loose, it can cause a loud clanking when the door is opening or closing. Take time to inspect all of the hardware on your garage door system and tighten anything that may be loose. If there is hardware is missing, be sure to replace it with the correct parts.

Check the Rollers

It’s fairly common for worn-out rollers to clunk along as they make their way up and down the garage door’s metal tracks. If your garage door is noisy, this is a key area to inspect. Check to see if the rollers on your door are worn down, and replace them if they are. When possible, choose nylon rollers over metal ones as these are typically quieter and don’t need to be lubricated as often. Be sure to measure your rollers before you purchase new ones. If you don’t feel confident replacing them yourself, contact your local garage door technician, and they can install the new rollers for you.

Keep It Maintained

If your garage door system isn’t well cared for, it’s likely to be quite noisy when it’s cycling. Conduct regular maintenance to ensure that your system remains in optimal condition and doesn’t produce obnoxious sounds when it’s running. Keeping your garage door system well maintained will not only make it quieter, but it will also extend the life of your unit.

Call a Pro

When you can’t identify the source of the noise on your own, contact your local garage door professionals. A trained garage door technician can examine your system and diagnose the source of the noise. On top of that, a garage door expert can help you create a maintenance plan to keep your system running quietly and efficiently for years to come.
