Modern technology allows you to open your garage door with the click of a button—until the battery dies! If you need to replace your garage door remote battery, never fear. With a few simple steps, you'll have your system back to normal and ready to use. Here's how to replace your garage door remote battery.

Identify Your Model

Most remotes require similar processes to replace the battery, but it still helps to know what model you’re working with. If you still have your owner's manual, check it out to find out which unit you own. At the very least, you'll need to know what type of battery you'll need to replace. You can do this in the next step when you remove the cover of your remote’s battery chamber.

Open the Backing

Regardless of your remote type, you'll need to remove the battery cover found on the back of the unit. Some models will require a small screwdriver to do so, and others can be removed by simply sliding it off. Once you've removed the protective plate, identify the battery you'll need to replace.

Remove Old Battery

When you have located the battery you need to replace, remove it and set it aside. Remember that you’ll need to safely dispose of it after you’ve finished with your remote. In the meantime, be sure to keep all batteries away from children and pets.

Replace Battery

Insert the new battery into the chamber of your remote. It’s important to match the correct ends of the battery within the socket, so identify the positive and negative ends before you install them. Once you have properly replaced the battery, you can place the cover back onto the remote and secure it tightly.

Reprogram the Remote

Now that you've replaced the battery, you can reprogram your remote. Here’s how to connect your remote to the garage door opener.

  1. Position a ladder next to your garage door motor.
  2. Grab your remote and safely climb the ladder.
  3. Locate the LEARN button on the garage door operator. Press the LEARN button and then release it. A light on your opener will glow for 30 seconds as an indicator that the LEARN function has been successfully activated.
  4. While the indicator light is on, press the button on the handheld remote you want to use to operate your door. Hold the button down until you see the light on your operator begin to blink.
  5. Release the button on your remote. If you have properly connected the remote, a light on your operator will flash several times, or you will hear two clicks coming from the unit.
